Epworth Richmond’s Medical Emergency Activation Committee Wins National Award
A determination to develop an innovative Medical Emergency Team for an Australian private hospital has seen Epworth Richmond’s Medical Emergency Activation Committee win the inaugural APHA Valuing Private Hospitals Staff Award for Quality, Excellence and Innovation in a Team.
Epworth Richmond’s Medical Emergency Activation Committee developed and introduced a Medical Emergency Team known as the Admitting Consultant Emergency (ACE) System ensuring timely clinical intervention for patients showing specific symptoms of deteriorating health.
As winner of the Excellence and Innovation in a Clinical or Non-Clinical Role (Team) Award, the Committee receives $10,000 in prize money, thanks to Award sponsor, HESTA Super Fund.

Macquarie University Hospital Chief Operating Officer Wins National Award
Sheer determination and the ability to manage the delivery of the operational aspects of the state-of-the-art Macquarie University Hospital on time and on budget has seen Evan Rawstron win the inaugural APHA Valuing Private Hospitals Staff Award for Quality, Excellence and Innovation for an Individual in a Non-Clinical Role.
The scale of effort involved in getting Australia’s first and only private university hospital up and running in six months was colossal. Mr Rawstron oversaw the development of processes and implementation of all technology and systems that would enable the hospital to run day-to-day as well as the recruitment, induction and training of 450 staff who came from across Australia.
As the winner of the Award for Excellence and Innovation in a Non-Clinical Role (Individual), Mr Rawstron will receive $10,000 in prize money, thanks to Award sponsor HESTA Super Fund

Private Hospitals Week 2011 Showcases Vital Role in Health Care
Private hospitals treat almost half of the patients in Australia and provide vital care while relieving public hospital waiting list pressure. During Private Hospitals Week (4-8 April), the sector across Australia will come together to raise awareness of the role private hospitals play in delivering quality and timely treatment and care to the community.
Private Hospitals Week is being celebrated as new research shows that eight in ten Australians believe our health system needs both public and private hospitals. The survey found that Australians overall are concerned about the state of Australia’s hospital system with over half concerned by the quality and amount of health services on offer.
Greenslopes Private Hospital Oncology Nurse Wins National Award
A passion and commitment to the health and welfare of patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer has resulted in Kerri Phillips-Smith of Greenslopes Private Hospital winning the inaugural APHA Valuing Private Hospital Staff Award for Quality, Excellence and Innovation for an Individual in a Clinical Role.
An experienced oncology nurse, Ms Phillips-Smith’s passion for excellent patient care led to the introduction of a breast care nurse at Greenslopes Private Hospital to support and guide breast cancer patients through their treatment.
As winner of the Excellence and Innovation in a Clinical Role (Individual), Ms Phillips-Smith will receive $10,000 in prize money, thanks to Award sponsor, HESTA Super Fund.

Why I value private hospitals – Patients tell their stories
The services private hospitals provide to our patients when they need it and the passion, commitment and care provided by our staff to put Australians back on their feet were the key themes espoused by patients in an inaugural competition on the Valuing Private Hospitals Campaign Facebook page.
The competition received 176 entries from Australians across the country who explained a time when private hospitals made a difference to their lives. Sherri-Lee Bexley, Natasha Hanckel-Spice, Ebony Jackson, Anna Perejma and Kate Jesaulenko all won a Flip Mino HD Pocket Video Camera for their entries.
